The new European Champion!

Carlos Martinez and his Crew

Paraleja Golf from Spain takes the cup!

Carlos Martinez and his crew on Paraleja Golf from Spain showed what they can do on the water once again today after another fantastic day’s racing. They came 3rd in the first race and 1st in the second and final race of this Championship, giving them 45 points, and just one point ahead of the next boat. But sometimes all you need is one point to win a Championship and today this proved to be the case.

The winning team members who had plenty to smile about were:
Chench Ortega (Bow)
Juanma Barrionveva (Trimmer)
Eugenio Pedreno (Cockpit)
Carlos Martinez (Helm)

Martinez said “Of course we came here to win, but to be honest we didn’t really expect to as we knew how tough the competition was going to be. We knew it was not going to be easy. We have been sailing together as a team now for 3 years and two years ago came 3rd in Keel in the World’s and last year we came 3rd again in the World’s in Santander. So this is our first major win on the international circuit and so makes it extra special for us all.”

Right behind them, with just one more point, finishing in 2nd position overall was another Spanish boat Mustang helmed by Luis Martinez, finishing the day with a 2nd and 12th. This team also had a 13 year old boy crewing for them; no doubt someone for us all to watch out for on the water in the future. Third overall was yet another Spanish boat, Nextel Engineering helmed by Rodr Camino who today had a 7th and spectacular 1st finishing with 58 points. One point behind in 4th position, is the Spanish boat ECC Viviendos helmed by Jose Maria Turcida in 1st and 10th position in today’s racing. So the Spanish have monopolised the first 4 positions of this European Championship with great expertise.

Team Baltic helmed by Henry Bomby ensured that Great Britain were next, finishing 5th overall, despite today having a 6th and a disappointing 31. This team showed great consistency throughout the Championship and have proved themselves to be a boat with great potential. The French boat Atlantis, helmed by Laurent Sambron came in 19th and 11th today, resulting in them losing a few places. But this team too have displayed some great sailing this week. Dropping a few positions today after a bad start in the first race, OLJ Spirit helmed by Rajola Federico took a 29th and 18th today which meant they finished 7th overall. In 8th position overall we have another Spanish boat Crocs helmed by Javier Aguado who today had 15th and 8th. Two French boats keep the French flag flying in 9th and 10th positions overall, giving them three boats in the top ten positions. In 9th we have Geodis helmed by Luc Nadal who actually had two 9th positions today, and in 10th position overall we have Ecole Navale CG29 helmed by Patrick Bot. This year’s Italian Championship winners, team Jeniale! finished 11th after a great day on the water today with an 8th and 3rd.

In 12th position was the Spanish boat Nautipaints. The top German boat was Procedes Diva who finished 13th and the top Dutch boat was Joie de Vivre finishing in 14th position. In 15th position was the German boat Campaign. For Estonia, team Nautilus came in 26th and also from far afield, Moonraker from Poland finished 38th.

So tonight the Spanish can fly their flags with pride as Paraleja Golf ensure that they are this year’s J80 European Champions. A hearty congratulations to the winners.

Friday races

J80 Europeans

Another three races took place today, on this penultimate day of the J80 European Championship. It was a day that tested and challenged this most impressive fleet. Tough competition and a high level of expertise among these crews means that every race is something they all have to fight very hard for, and today the top three positions have changed again.

The wind was constant and gradually increased throughout the afternoon, providing more stability to the conditions than this championship has previously seen. Today we have a new leader in the Spanish boat Peraleja Golf helmed by Carlos Martinez, who took a superb 1st, 3rd, and 1st today placing him firmly ahead of the rest of the fleet with 22 points. This is not such a surprise to J80 followers, as they came 3rd in the World’s in Keel in 2008 and again in Santander in 2009.

Second is another Spanish boat, Mustang, helmed by Luis Martinez, a boat that is also often found in the top few places. Today Mustang had a 2nd , 8th and 7th, giving them 32 points and thus 10 points behind the leaders. Mustang was 2nd in the World’s in Santander 2009 and so already his reputation precedes him. However new to such high placing in the international circuit and thus a boat to watch out for in the future, is the Italian boat OLJ Spirit helmed by Federico Rajola. Today they came 25th, 10th and 2nd giving them 41 points and a third overall. There you have the present top three. Two more Spanish boats take 5th and 6th places respectively – Jose Maria Torcida’s ECC Viviendas finished the day with a 14th, 2nd and 8th and 48 points whilst Rodr Camino’s Nextel Engineering took a 23rd, 4th and 4th today and finished up with 50 points.

To complete today’s top ten, we have Lauren Sambron’s Atlantis from France in 6th position with a 21st, 5th and OCS today. The British Team Baltic helmed by Henry Bomby lies in 7th position with 60 points and a 5th, 14th and 14th today. Another Spanish boat Crocs, helmed by Javier Aguado lies in 8th position with 72 points and a 15th, 25th and 5th today. The French boat Geodis goes down to 9th position overall with a 19th, 16th and 10th today giving him 78 points. The German boat Procedes Diva helmed by Beilken Bjoern enters tenth position, also with 78 points and today doing very well with a 4th, 24th and 2nd.

With only one more day’s racing to go, we wonder if the crews will have an early night? Judging by the atmosphere in the bar area at Fraglia Vela Malcesine, I doubt this will be the case. Everyone is enjoying the atmosphere and great hospitality provided by the hosts. But of course the best entertainment is on the water and they all want to win.

Check this page tomorrow to see who the winners are and don’t forget to also check the gallery of great photos on this website for some more great shots of the day.

“Ciao” for now!

Second Day

The French take the lead over the Italians

Attention les francais! How things on the water can change in just a day. This event is truly European. After today’s three races, the French boat Atlantis helmed by Laurent Sambran from APLC takes the honour of now lying firmly in 1st place with a 9th, 5th and 2nd today, giving them 30 points overall. Second overall today is the Italian boat OLJ Spirit helmed by Federico Rajola taking 1st, 8th and 14th today giving them 33 points. Following right behind in their shadow, also with 33 points is the Spanish boat Forty Five helmed by Luis Martinez. The British boat Baltic Wharf helmed by Henry Bomby lies in 4th. So now the four countries and their teams will battle it out over the next few days to maintain or improve their leading positions.

In 5th and 6th positions are once again the Spanish, with ECC Vivendas and Crocs. It was a great day for the French, with boat Geodis helmed by Luc Nadal taking a 1st position in the 2nd race and a 7th in the 3rd race, placing them 7th overall today. This boat has already proved itself this year by sailing well at Spi-Ouest in Brittany at Easter. The Spanish however have 5 boats in the 1st ten positions, the French and the Italians have two and the UK just one. ”

The three races of today provided great entertainment and emotion for all of the participants, with the “ora” wind arriving punctually and providing consistency throughout the afternoon. This was a welcome relief for all the teams who yesterday faced such challenging conditions with unstable winds all day.

So the motto of the day is “Vive la France!” But all the teams from every country will remember that we are just half way through this championship, and tomorrow is another day...

Please note as we go to press, a number of protests will take place tonight and tomorrow morning which may alter positions before tomorrow’s start.

23 th June 2010 - 20:07 (+1h GMT*)

First Day

two race today

The J80 European Championship kicked off today with a delayed start. The usual “Ora” wind from the South was delayed which resulted in a delayed start and only two races taking place today. Just as the wind was full of surprises, so were the races. The Spanish dominated the leading positions all day finishing first (Martinez Luis in Forty Five), second (Ecc Viviendas) and third (Peraleja Golf). Happily for the hosting country, Federico Rajola’s OLJ Spirit Hatamuri took a first place in the first race, leading the fleet around the windward mark. They came tenth in the second race which left them lying fourth overall. Of the UK entries, Team Baltic, helmed by Henry Bomby lead the UK boats finishing eighth overall followed by Aqua J helmed by Patrick Liardet in eleventh position and the Cardiff based Purple Haze helmed by Roger Dunstan in thirteenth position. So it was not a bad day for the ‘Brits’ considering it was such a large fleet of 46 boats. Let’s hope for good conditions tomorrow and another great day on the water for all the boats that have travelled so far. All wanting one thing – to win this Championship. If a country were to win, then Spain is surely dominating. But of course everyone will try to learn from today and have a better result tomorrow. So watch this space!
